What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?
Sustainable Aviation Fuel or SAF is a lower-carbon alternative to fossil jet fuel. It’s made with renewable and waste-derived materials, such as municipal solid waste, waste fats and oils, or agricultural and forestry residue. It is one of the most effective tools available today to reduce emissions from flying. SAF can lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 per cent compared to fossil jet fuel. SAF works with today’s aircraft, can be blended with fossil jet fuel, and requires no changes to infrastructure. Which means that it’s ready today for use in aircraft around the world. Expanding the use of SAF supports climate goals and helps signal increased demand for and production of lower-carbon fuels.
Working together to advance Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Air Canada and YVR support SAF because both organizations share the goal of reducing aviation emissions. SAF is one of the tools available today with the greatest potential for reducing aviation emissions, but it remains significantly more expensive than conventional jet fuel. By purchasing SAF environmental attributes through this program, you help close that cost gap. Your support contributes directly to the SAF that Air Canada uses in its flights and helps signal strong demand for lower-carbon aviation. The tool above uses an internationally recognized developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to estimate GHG emissions associated with your flight. It considers factors like aircraft fuel consumption, seat configuration, cabin class, aircraft type, and historical load factors from more than 400 airlines in its calculations.
SAF is made from renewable and waste-derived biomass, while fossil jet fuel is made from fossil fuels that are extracted from the ground. The carbon in SAF comes from sources that are already in circulation and are part of the natural carbon cycle, while the production of fossil jet fuel releases carbon that has been stored in the ground for millions of years. So, although SAF and fossil jet fuel produce similar levels of emissions when burned in an aircraft, over the full lifecycle of the fuel, from production to use, SAF results in lower overall emissions compared to fossil jet fuel
When you support SAF through this program, you do so by purchasing SAF environmental attributes. SAF environmental attributes refer to the quantified environmental benefits of using SAF instead of conventional fossil jet fuel, and more specifically, to the associated GHG emissions reductions on a life cycle basis. Environmental attributes associated with SAF are tracked and retired or assigned on third-party registries or internal ledgers. Retiring or assigning carbon credits and environmental attributes associated with SAF prevents these from being resold or otherwise used a second time, in order to avoid double-counting.
YVR has partnered with the Province of British Columbia and the Canadian Council for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (C-SAF) to raise public awareness about the use of cleaner fuels aimed at reducing flight-related emissions. Our goals are to help travellers understand what SAF is and how it works, as well as to encourage its widespread adoption across the aviation sector, particularly among airlines operating out of YVR. YVR has partnered with Choose to enable travellers to support the use of SAF by airlines. YVR also directly supports airlines through British Columbia’s low-carbon aviation fuel incentive program, which assists carriers using sustainable aviation fuels in the province. By providing incentives to airlines operating at YVR, this program helps fund the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable aviation fuels and significantly reduces flight-related carbon emissions. During the program’s first two years, over 28.1 million liters of SAF were purchased, avoiding the emission of approximately 61,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e). If you choose to participate, the personal information you provide will be collected and processed by Chooose for the purposes of administering and operating the program, processing payments, issuing receipts, and complying with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. When you book a flight using Aeroplan points or a combination of points and cash, Air Canada will its estimated scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by purchasing carbon credits based on emissions estimated to be associated with your flight*. Specifically, the carbon credits retired will be an amount equivalent to the estimated GHG emissions associated with the portion of your itinerary that’s operated by Air Canada, once the flight is completed. You can view the estimated scope 1 GHG emissions that will be compensated by Air Canada when booking a flight redemption using Aeroplan points, or a combination of Aeroplan points and cash.
